and it’s july.

I always forget how intense summer session courses can be. Three weeks of daily discussion sections have gone by in a flash, and it’s July. Yesterday I took my first swim in the lake. And Boh and I have two more weeks here in the lake house, and in our sweet small town, before we move on to our next adventure. Here are a few snippets from the last few weeks:

july11 - 1

A porch pancake breakfast with friends who came to visit for the holiday weekend.

july11 - 2

We had a dinner party! And a galette! (Tomato, corn, zucchini, scallions, and parmesan.)

july11 - 3

Dick: The Game. (A Moby-Dick themed version of Cards Against Humanity. Yes, we are nerds, and proud of it.)

july11 - 4

This face.

july11 - 5

These falls.

july11 - 6

These flowers, in between where I park my car and where our summer course was held. I’d turn the corner each morning and just breathe them in.

july11 - 7

Packing. I started with the knitting books — I didn’t realize I have so many! The box pile is slowly growing, and the movers will be here in just under two weeks…

plants/procrastination.

On Sunday, Boh and I went back to the creek. (It is an especially good weekend walk because it is sort of hidden. Only locals.) But first we made pancakes for our houseguest!

may5 - 2

First porch pancakes of the season.

may5 - 3

Then it was back to the tree the beavers have been working on.

may5 - 4

And over the same mossy log.

may5 - 5

But once we made it down to the creek, we met this adorable creature. PUPPY. Boh and I were both very excited. 10 weeks old, and so excited about playing in the creek.

may5 - 6

This guy was pretty happy to lounge while I read.

may5 - 7

And appreciated the view. I am going to miss this spot.

may5 - 8

More reading, while Boh snored.

may5 - 1

And then we walked down to a friend’s dock for beer, brie, and sunset.

may5 - 11

On Monday, Boh and I took a walk through one of the neighborhoods downtown. So many lovely flowers blooming!

may5 - 9

I was inspired. So after making not very much progress on my conference paper for later this week, I went to get herbs, a geranium, and a little more potting soil to pretty up my front steps.

may5 - 10

I know I’ll only be here until late July, and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to take these with me, but it seems silly to just not have my own supply of basil, Thai basil, mint, thyme, cilantro…and geraniums this summer, right? RIGHT.

still not knitting…

…but I need to add my voice to the chorus of folks saying that the new Alabama Shakes album is AMAZING. Seriously. I loved their first album — Brittany Howard is the real deal, and also, I’m a fan of any lady who writes a song where the dude says, “Now let me take you out, buy you new appliances…”

But this is pretty incredible. Here’s Don’t Wanna Fight and Gimme All Your Love. The rest of the album is just as good. And perfect for this turn back toward winter we’ve been experiencing. Might get some snow flurries today, highs in the forties.

More of the same around here:

april23 - 1

Boh, “helping” me prep for class.

april23 - 2

More popcorn with the curry-cumin-cinnamon-salt spice mixture.

april23 - 3

First spring flowers in the yard!

april23 - 4

More “helping,” this time with formatting the bibliography of the dissertation.

april23 - 5

Another professor costume. K. says that I should call it a uniform instead of a costume, since I’m not pretending. We’ll see about that :)

april23 - 6

Boh keeps watch over the front yard.

april23 - 7

And smiles after a great walk through the park. This dog is thrilled about spring. (We should be back to spring temps after a cooler today/tomorrow.)

ruination day (april 14)

Gillian Welch’s “April the 14th Part 1” is worth a listen all the time, but maybe especially today. And thank you, friends, for all your kind words and congratulations. It hasn’t really hit me yet that I did this thing. Maybe once I’ve filed the thing at the end of the month?

Anyway, my first few days as a doctor involved catching up on some sleep, eating breakfast on the porch, and taking some solid walks with my sweet dog. (And some actual celebrating.) Want to see?

april14 - 1

Boh, basking in the sun. (I had to laugh–his eyes were closed, but he was holding up his head and sort of nodding as he fell asleep.)

april14 - 2

More beautiful flowers to celebrate. I love spring flowers.

april14 - 3

Our local waterfall, raging after a lot of spring rain.

april14 - 4

Boh was pretty excited about it — can you see that he’s drooling? (This is a little gross, but Boh only drools when he is excited, either on a really great walk filled with good smells, or when he’s playing outside with new dog friends. His drool is really…viscous? So he’ll be running around with a serious strand of it hanging from his mouth. Sort of icky, but also strangely endearing.)

april14 - 5

Celebratory beverage, the first. I have decided that all beverages should be chilled with ice spheres.

april14 - 6

Warm enough for bare legs! Also worth celebrating after such a long winter.

april14 - 7

Porch breakfast (scrambled eggs, salsa, corn tortillas), flowers, and a matching notebook. (For slowly getting back to work.)

april14 - 8

My trusty sidekick, snoring under the table. I’ll take it. No knitting to share right now, but I imagine I’ll be back to it soon…

fall.

I just looked over at Boh snoring next to me on the couch, and thought you might want to see a little bit of what we’ve been up to the last few months. I’m not knitting very much, but I’m hoping that my fingers will want to work on something simple and help me catch up on the wedding gift knitting in my queue. Things are very busy around here — fellowship applications, the academic job market, the dissertation. I can’t promise there will be much blogging, but I am still here, still reading blogs, and still very much appreciating the internet community of knitters and spinners. Happy fall to all of you.

We enjoyed watching this flicker look for treats on the stone steps outside the enclosed porch.

4oct04

Scrambed eggs, avocado, and salsa on corn tortillas: lunch of dissertators (champions?).

Happy, happy dog.

4oct12

4oct11

Fall has begun. I love it, and I think Boh really does, too. Maybe there’s something about the smell of leaves?

4oct10

Fancy shoes and a manhattan help with proofreading, right? (One of my goals for this fall is to become a little bit more proficient in the land of mixing drinks.)

4oct2

A view of the lake from campus on a clear, sunny day.

Thanks for reading, friends.

porch life.

Reading. With chocolate peanut butter ice cream.

Watching a storm roll in from the porch.

A pinwheel blanket begun. A wedding lap blanket the color of the sea.

I did not take this picture on my porch. What kind of flowers are these? This is a snapshot from a walk I took last week in town.

I don’t know why I snapped this picture. But I did wear this outfit on Memorial Day too, so I’m sharing.

This one needs no explanation.

And now I’m all caught up on photos! (And I managed to sneak a little bit of knitting in there.) The wedding I attended last weekend was lovely, and some new friends I made there took me sailing — in a race! It was so much fun, and the perfect way to spend the Sunday morning after a Saturday spent celebrating a very dear friend.

I don’t have any pictures of this, but today I took my first swim in the lake this summer. I’m looking forward to a lot more of that. And now I should really get some work done today…

mojo?

Have you seen mine? Because I’ve had a hard time finding it lately in the knitting/spinning/blogging department. (Also, the dissertation department.) But you know what? I’m newly resolved not to let it bother me. I’m sure it will come back; after all, this space is dear to me.

But enough of that. Want to see what I’ve been up to this week?

Swimming. (Suit drying on the porch.)

Eating. (More specifically, eating tomatoes: in tarts, broiled on bread with cheese, and straight from the cutting board.)

Picking flowers. (And putting them all over the house.)

Lounging with Boh.

And today? Well, today I’m taking Saturday seriously. I slept in, made pancakes, read for pleasure, and frolicked a bit with Boh. I even put on my swimsuit in order to encourage the sun to come out. See?

Still rainy, but it might clear up enough for me to take a quick dip.

I’m also macerating blueberries on the kitchen counter. Later today, they’ll become this blueberry crumble. (Berries courtesy of Laura.)

I don’t have any new pictures to share of my Whisper cardigan, but I have been knitting on it. Photographic evidence soon. Happy weekend!

bachelor buttons.

First farm flowers of the season.

(Also, a hint as to my new toy: an iPhone. Thank you, Apple recycling program, for the gift card you sent me when I mailed you my old, unhappy MacBook. Public Service Announcement: You get more in trade-in value if you keep all of the pieces — power cords, OS software disks, etc.)

Also, everything might look cooler with Hipstamatic — even a table full of bachelor button bouquets. Happy weekend, all!

finally, knitting.

Boh refused to look at me while I was taking pictures of the border of my stripe study shawl. He was too busy watching the door for his best dog friend to arrive to be concerned with the less-than-one-inch (!) I have left to knit on this project. Silly Boh. And then he did this:

Oh, that face. I love this dog. Know what else I love? Fresh flowers. These came from the yard:

It was supposed to be stormy today, but it has turned out to be a beautiful day. My fingers are crossed for a colorful sunset, as a handful of folks from my department are coming over for porch drinks soon. Happy holiday weekend!

the forecast.

The farmers at the CSA I belong to send out an email with the week’s “veggie forecast.” This week’s report suggested that the nights are getting cooler, and that a lot of the crops available for picking will likely last only until the first frost…which might be here sooner than we think. So, yesterday, instead of knitting sleeves as a break from my reading, I decided to spend an extra hour at the farm. I gathered at least 15 quarts of paste tomatoes, a canvas bag full of green beans, and a few handfuls of tomatillos for salsa — all in addition to the week’s share (onions, peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, salad mix, basil, parsley, potatoes, leeks).

Looks like that veggie forecast has turned into a bit of a rooster forecast — I think I know what I’ll be doing this weekend! (Preserving. I just saw a recipe for tomato jam that looks pretty yummy, I’d love to can a few more quarts of tomatoes for the shelf, and I can always use more dilly beans…)

Also, I couldn’t help myself. I picked a huge armful of zinnias — the fields are still practically overflowing with them. Yesterday was the first farm day that felt like fall, and the cooler temperatures made it much easier for me to linger in the rows of herbs, flowers, and veggies.

I had about a quart of handpicked paste tomatoes that had ripened nicely in the fridge yesterday, and the plan was to make a small pot of sauce. I actually finished the book I had set out to read yesterday, so I decided to do something more elaborate — homemade noodles. This was the first time I’ve ever hand-cut noodles to a fettucine-ish width, and boy, do I need some more practice. Despite their irregularities, the noodles were delicious. We ate them immediately, with some homemade sauce. (And I didn’t even think to take a picture. My stomach was too excited about dinner.)

I do, however, have some non-pajama action shots of my textured shawl to share.

This is slightly too scratchy to be worn super close to my neck, but draped a bit more loosely, it adds a nice amount of warmth. It is also perfect to wrap around my shoulders while curled up on the couch. This will certainly be in my rotation of warm things this fall and winter — and I think it might look really nice with my Kerrera! Extra motivation to start those sleeves later today…
