dog piles to pesto.

By the end of our weekend with Tango, here’s what was happening: dog pile. Tango is staying with us this weekend, too, and I’m psyched for more of this!

I don’t know why he loves popcorn so much. (Hmm, do I know why I love popcorn so much?)

Lap dog? I don’t know why Boh was feeling this lovey, but I managed to snap a picture with my free arm.

I used to make applesauce bread every week, especially during my first year of grad school. I don’t know why I stopped. I made maybe the first loaf I’ve baked of it in this house on Tuesday. Delicious.

We are both working. Hard.

My friend R. offered this caption: The ultimate comfort food. Love it.

The transit of Venus! (Via live webcast. I watched it as I worked. And yes, I took this picture of my computer screen.)

Which brings us to pesto. I made this last night with basil from my first farm share of the summer season, and it was the perfect post-yoga meal.

Oops. Looks like there’s no knitting content here. Which doesn’t mean I’m not knitting. My pinwheel blanket is growing. Really, it is.

FO: handspun legwarmers.

LOVE. These were so comforting to knit, and they were just the thing I wanted to pull on when I climbed out of bed today and looked outside at this morning’s overcast sky. I followed Adrian’s legwarmer recipe, and using size 7 dpns and my handspun patchwork 2-ply merino, here’s what I did:

CO 48 st. Knit in 2×2 rib for 2 inches. Knit 1 inch and inc to 50 st (by kfb on first and last st of round). Knit until legwarmer is 5 inches, and inc to 52 st. At 6 inches, inc to 54 st. At 11.5 inches, inc to 56. At about 13 inches, knit 2.5 inches of 2×2 rib, and BO loosely. Make numero dos!

Phew. Now I am free to lose the lime green post-it note I was keeping all that information on. Hooray for the internet.

The colors in my Monday night takeout sushi feast reminded me of my legwarmers, so I paused long enough to snap a picture. There is a new sushi place in town, and I’ve been there three times this month. So good.

Yesterday marked the start of the u-pick portion of my CSA — in addition to all the regular stuff in my share, I picked strawberries, sugar snap peas, chard, cilantro and bachelor buttons in the fields. It took all of my willpower to not keep the quart of strawberries on the seat next to me on the drive home. We polished off the entire quart of sun-warmed berries instead of eating lunch, which to me, means that summer is really here.

Also, late last night I spent about twenty minutes at the wheel before bed. This is the beginning of the first bobbin of what I think will be a 2-ply. The fiber is 3 0z. of AVFKW black bfl blend in Fireside Chat.

Alright, time to get to work. We have plans to head to a bbq this evening at a farmhouse some friends of mine are house-sitting, so I’m hoping the sun decides to come out!

eggs and veggies/wrap and turn.

Yesterday’s lunch: 2 farm fresh fried eggs (say that 5 times fast) and a braising mixture of red mustard, baby kale and chard, braised in olive oil and then drizzled with some balsamic. The amount of greens you get in a farm share early in the season can be a bit overwhelming, but if you try to include them in every meal, you’ll get through them — and you’ll enjoy them. Trust me.

week3veggies

This week’s veggie haul: harukei turnips, garlic scapes, basil, rosemary, mint, beets, chard, pak choi, escarole, komatsuna, mustard greens and u-pick strawberries (3 more quarts!) and sugar snap peas (2 quarts!). I have plans to make a garlic scape pesto (and to bake some bread to go with it).

I imagine the 2 quart mixing bowl will get a lot of use this week…

Also of note: I turned the heel of my first lacy ribs sock!

I am extremely pleased with the way the heel looks and feels: no holes! This is my first truly successful heel involving the wrap + turn. Here’s one more photo of my progress (note the sleeping dog lounging on the bed in the background):

If I’m going to finish the pair by the end of the month for the Socks From the Toe Up KAL, I need to finish sock #1 in the next day or two. I’m moving much more quickly now that I’ve memorized the pattern repeat, and I’m really enjoying these socks.

My kitchen timer is hollering for me to check on the granola in the oven, and then I need to get in a few solid hours of reading before a quiet walk with Boh and an evening yoga class that I’m psyched to check out.
