apples/applesauce.

My university has an orchard, and that orchard began its annual apple sale this weekend: buy half a bushel, get half a bushel free. (Chair for scale.)

Applesauce, simmering.

Packed, stacked, and ready to go into the freezer. This was the first batch of the week. Batch #3 is simmering on the stove right now. I am going to be ready for winter! (If only the paper I’m presenting later this month were as easy to prepare.)

  1. I am sure your paper will be as delicious as that applesauce. I made some with rosemary the other week (applesauce, that is, not a colloquium paper) and it was such a delightful quasi-grown up spin on it. Yum.

  2. Yum! I wish papers came together as easily as other stuff sometimes, too. I’ve got one going … and well, if I could just simmer it on the stove for a while, things might be better.

  3. I love homemade applesauce and the aroma it fills the house with. As a kid ours was pink as my mom cooked it without peeling or coring the apples, the skin color infusing the sauce. I’ve never frozen applesauce. How is it thawed? Any taste lost?

  4. So glad to know there are some people your age who still know how to do things that used to be considered basic skills. Not too many of you out there, I think.

  5. Mmmmm, good memories brought up by this one. My grandma used to make homemade applesauce. Her’s was almost caramelized instead of just sauced. She started with a dallop of butter and sliced apples, added sugar and cooked just until the slices got soft. Not long enough for them to completely break down. Yummmm. You may have inspired my night time activity for this evening!!

  6. I love making applesauce and applebutter even better. The whole house smells so good and it is so fresh tasting when you use it in the middle of winter. Yours looks yummy!

  7. We canned 18 quarts of applesauce plus all the fresh applesauce we could eat and bake with…and then turned around and made pear butter…ah the wonderful scents of the fall home.

  8. wow! yay! etc. that’s a lot of apples. i wish i could buy apples-or anything- by the bushel. yummy looking apple sauce- exciting sounding paper presenting, good luck!
